I love to always hear about new releases, watch some of my favorite influences on their new beauty hauls and monthly favorites. What are the new skincare, makeup, perfume products that have just been released? Who has tried them out? What do our beauty influencers think? Should I stalk the company website to buy it? Do I have some dupes of these new products already? I know, so many questions! For me, I get really excited to hear some of my favorite beauty influencers talk about the new products that are going to be released. But, there is a part of me that is just pretty damn exhausted of chasing after the new product that’s being released. Basically, most of the excitement disappeared. The need to feel that I have to keep up with the newest of the newest can be a bit much. Of course, no one has asked for me to do so but as a makeup junkie, I refuse to be left out of the movement!
Then, I buy products just because some of my favorite influencers loved them, the employee at the Sephora store hypes it up, I am loyal to the brand or just the packaging or I just refuse to be left out of not having those products in my collection (see above). I believe that part of what I have just described is the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). Does it sometimes take away from the excitement of enjoying the make-up you are buying? Honestly, I feel that way sometimes. Therefore, I started practicing what I call “FOMO Therapy”.
What IS FOMO Therapy?
For me, FOMO therapy is when I see so many releases and so many videos about product reviews that are out, I am excited about purchasing something new but exhausted at the same time because I just see more products. Therefore, I am reminded to go into my make-up collection and take a look at what I already have and bring new life to them. It makes me feel even better because I’m not just buying new products but I am actually enjoying make up and my products that I’ve purchased! Also, I think of pairing items together in which I’ve never thought of when I purchased them. I find that FOMO therapy works for me as I do not become overly excited nor exhausted with all of the new product launches and releases. But I take a moment and just watch what I have some of the products and just remind myself as to how lucky I am to have make up and beauty products to enjoy! I mean, I have to! I have other responsibilities in life than to constantly buy make up, even though I love make up so much. With the rising cost of everything, I know that I cannot afford not to do so!
I have always been a make up person since I was 10 years old where I would wear my mothers make up, I will sneak into where it by the way. Over the past decade or so I feel as if we’re always chasing after the next release, re or release he releases just to have a stash of beauty products that we barely even touch. If you ask me I think we should get back to really enjoying the products that we are buying again, especially with the rising cost and inflation. When I take the time to go through my stash and started purging things out, I’ve noticed that I have fallen back in love with a majority of the make-up that I’ve purchased over the years. And as a result, I had to start changing my purchasing strategies when purchasing beauty products especially make up. I want to always collect new make-up but as long as I am able to successfully integrate it with the products that I already have to maximize their benefit or pick up something that I don’t have at all. Also, I’m kind of mindful of the size for example I may not need a full size of a blush when there is a mini size that is available, especially when I have so many blushes in my collection already. Or sometimes when I do watch beauty halls and reviews, I try to think what I already have in my collection that may be a dupe for what I have seen in the videos to determine with that suffice.
Have you purchased eyeshadow palette that you’ve been dying to get maybe a year ago just to never be able to wear it because you purchase so many other pallets on top of that? Well why not let it be a new item for you the next year? Sometimes it makes me feel good to know that I’m taking items in my collection and either they are new to me because I never got a time or getting around to using them or I have use them and push them to side for something else but decided to pick them back up. The question for all of us is what collections or what products that we have that we should think about rotating back into our make-up stash to wear over the next month, quarter, year or so?
For me, FOMO therapy is when I see so many releases and so many videos about product reviews that are out, I am excited about purchasing something new but exhausted at the same time because I just see more products. Therefore, I am reminded to go into my make-up collection and take a look at what I already have and bring new life to them. I have other responsibilities in life than to constantly buy make up, even though I love make up so much. Again, with inflation resulting in the rising cost of everything, I cannot afford not to do so!
